When you invest in Simonton energy-efficient windows and doors you have a wealth of glass options to choose from, including frosted glass, a stylish and beautiful choice for your home’s interior and exterior. Many of our clients ask if there’s a special frosted window cleaner they need to use to care for their custom windows.
Frosted Glass Styles
People often equate frosted windows with opaque shower doors but there are many glass styles that can be considered “frosted.” Acid etching and sand blasting are both used to create a variety of frosted glass types, many with intricate patterns. Whichever you choose, a professional glass cleaner is not needed.
DYI Frosted Window Cleaner
Caring for custom glass takes a little extra effort because the surface is textured. Other than that, it just takes some common-sense glass cleaner supplies and a little elbow grease! Before getting started, be sure to put on latex or rubber gloves. This is less for skin protection and more for avoiding leaving fingerprints behind when you’re finished.
- Spray the glass panel surface with a commercial, ammonia-based glass cleaner. Citrus infused cleaners are not recommended for frosted glass. If there are stubborn stains, try an equal mix of vinegar and water. To get rid of even tougher stains, add a half-cup of baking soda to the vinegar/water mix.
- Use paper towels, crumpled newspaper, or an abrasive sponge to wipe the glass in a circular motion. The abrasive sponge is the best choice if the microscopic pits in the glass are particularly dirty.
- If there are metallic “dings” caused by metal objects hitting the frosted glass, use a wet emery paper that has a similar grade coarseness as the glass to gently smooth them out.
- Clean the frosted window once more with the professional window cleaner.
- Dry the surface with a clean microfiber cloth or paper towel.
That’s it! Frosted glass is both functional and aesthetically pleasing but, like most glass, can quickly get dusty, dirty, and stained. Use a homemade cleaner on a regular basis and your custom glass windows and doors will look beautiful day in and day out.
