From delicate window designs to opaque shower doors, frosted glass has many wonderful uses for both looks and function.
However, when most people ask for Frosted Glass, they do not really want frosted glass at all.
They usually want a pattern glass that has some obscurities or frosted qualities to it. The term ‘frosted glass’ has become a catch-all for a large number of different glass styles. When it comes down to it, what people really want is something for privacy that is also attractive and still lets light through.
That said, some people do actually want frosted.
Frosting Glass can be achieved by a variety of styles but not all pertain to windows or shower enclosures.
Here’s a look each type of frosted glass and whether or not they are appropriate for windows or shower enclosures.
Acid Etching
In this technique, fluoride compounds are used to roughen the surface of glass and create a frosted effect. Acid etching can produce whole panes of frosted glass as well as intricate, detailed designs. Because the frost is incorporated right into the surface of the glass, the effect is permanent and durable. D and D Glassworks can help with this technique if it is truly what you are looking for. However, 9 times out of 10 most consumers are looking for pattern glass, such as Glue Chip, Delta Frost, Barok, Rain Glass, or Obscure, just to name a few.
Sandblasting
A wide variety of frosted glass types and styles can be created through a sandblasting process. A machine shoots grains of sand, beads, or other minuscule material at the surface to create the frost. Sandblasted glass can be more or less transparent, with a variety of esthetics. Sandblasting offers premium frosted glass options and can be used for detailed designs and patterns as well. Many artists use this technique to create fine works of art. D and D does not recommend this process for windows or shower enclosures as you can attain much better and consistent results from other products readily available.
Applied Film
Another affordable option that you can have applied professionally or attempt yourself is frosted glass film. These coatings can be applied directly to glass or used to cover spray frosting. The film can also be cut into designs for a more affordable custom look. This technique is generally done by a sign shops and is more ideal for businesses who have a message or sign. When deciding between types of frosted glass, consider costs and appearance as well as the location and use of the glass. If the glass will face outdoors or if it will be used in the bathroom or kitchen, the best and longest lasting results will come from acid-etched or better yet, other readily available styles that are often misunderstood to be ‘frosted glass.’
