Frosted glass has small pits or etch marks that can hold onto dirt and grime, but thankfully cleaning the glass is very easy! You just need to figure out whether to use a cleaner that is either acid or base on the pH scale.
Bleach and ammonia-based products are bases. Most glass cleaners, such as Windex, fall into this category. They work well on removing grease and dirt.
Acid-based cleaners include vinegar and citrus products, as well as mineral deposit cleaners such as CLR, Lime Away and Bark. For those hard water stains in the bathroom or kitchen, you’ll want to use acids to remove stains from frosted glass.
Frosted Glass Stain Removal Methods
You can clean frosted glass and get rid of even the most stubborn stains using products that you probably already own. Try one method in a small spot and if the stain doesn’t go away, switch to a different method. One of these methods will surely get your frosted glass clean, stain-free and streak-free.
Note: we recommend using rubber gloves for the task, to protect your skin and also to avoid leaving fingerprints. For scrubbing, you can use newspapers, kitchen sponges or microfiber cloths. Paper towels and dish cloths tend to leave lint behind.
- Vinegar and baking soda. First, you can try spraying a vinegar-water solution and wiping with a clean cloth. If that doesn’t work, try mixing a half-cup of baking soda with the vinegar solution to form a paste.
- Mineral deposit cleaners. Those products like CLR and Lime Away are great for bathroom and kitchen areas with white buildup, and you can use them to clean sinks and bathtubs that are also stained.
- Glass stain removal products from the hardware store. Commercial-grade glass cleaners can be found at home improvement stores. These are harsher than what your grocery store carries, so be careful and try on an inconspicuous area first.
- Sandpaper or emery paper. As a last resort, you can use “wet-and-dry” sandpaper products to buff out heavy stains. Be gentle and use circular motions.
Preventing Stains on Frosted Glass
Fortunately, maintaining your glass does not require a rigorous daily routine. If you have hard water problems you can get the best results from frosted shower doors by using a squeegee to prevent minerals from sticking. Some people also like to use rain repellent products (like you might use on card windshields) to help the water bead off.
Removing and preventing stains on frosted glass really just requires a gentle scrub now and then using whichever acid or base cleaner that works best for you. With just an occasional cleaning your frosted glass can look fresh and clean day in and day out.
